Matthew Edwards was the Director of Bands from 2002-2025. Under his direction the Fuquay Varina High School Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Bengals and chamber ensembles furthered the tradition of musical excellence, competitive success, and a connection to the community established by Mr. Enloe. The Marching Bengals earned over 100 caption and class awards in NC competitions during his time as director. The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band consistently received Excellent and Superior ratings at District MPA. Over 100 of his of his students have participated in All-District, All-State, and collegiate honors groups.
His distinguished record of service went beyond the classroom as he served as ECDBA High School MPA Chai (2016-2022), CDBA President (2010-2012), NCBA MPA Committee Representative (2009-2012, 2015-2018), CDBA High School All District Auditions Chair (2005-2008), Southeast All District Clinic Chair/Host (1998) and Southeast District Concert MPA Chair/Host (2001). He has also served as Music Director of the Triangle Youth Brass Band, conductor of the UNCG Summer Music Camp, conductor of the UNCW Honors Band, and Cooperating Teacher for student interns from Campbell University, UNC-Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, and Appalachian State University. He also authored the Central District All-District auditions handbook and co-authored the Central District All-District scoring rubrics.
Mr. Edwards was honored with the CDBA Band Director of the Year in 2008 and the Award of Excellence in 2014.
Mr. Edwards retired in 2025 to his home in Fuquay Varina, with his wife, Robin Gorham and their cats.
